How to Hang Wallpaper

How to Hang Wallpaper the professional way

Decorating our homes can be lots of fun but of course, if you’re new to DIY, it can all seem a little confusing. the key to great decorating, is of course, great preparation.

And if you can get to grips with a tape measure, a bucket and a stanley knife, you should be ok. But if you think you’re ready to tackle your first wallpapering job, here’s my top tips for getting hanging wallpaper just right.

MEASURE MEASURE AND MEASURE AGAIN

Measure the wall and buy slightly more wallpaper than you need. This will allow you to trim the wallpaper to fit the wall perfectly as well as match up patterns. Most websites have a handy calculator that will help you figure out just how many rolls you need. Add in a little bit extra if it’s your first attempt as there are sure to be a few mistakes.

PREPARATION

Preparation is absolutely essential when it comes to hanging wallpaper the professional way. Prep the wall by patching any holes or cracks using a fine filler. Clean and sand the wall surface, and apply a primer coat if needs be. Ensure all the lumps and bumps are smoothed out so your wallpaper will glide on.

PASTING

Wallpaper comes in two different types. Some traditional wallpaper will require you to apply the paste to the back of each wallpaper strip and let it soak in for a few minutes before you hang it. A lot of modern wallpapers meanwhile, advise you to paste the wall instead. Check the instructions that come with your wallpaper to ensure you’re buying the right kind of paste and which pasting option is best.

WORKING DOWN

Hang the wallpaper strips starting at the ceiling and working down. Use a wallpaper brush to smooth out any bubbles and ensure a perfect finish.
