5 Tips for Renovating your Room

Our Top Tips For Renovating a Room

Do you feel overwhelmed with the amount there is to do around the home? Is there one room that you’ve put off renovating because you simply don’t know what to do with it? Sometimes it is impossible to know where to start and don’t worry because we have all been there!

Well here’s a bit of inspiration with our top 5 tips to get you started on that job that you’ve been putting off since you moved in!

BUDGET

Cost of living and the rise of Martin Lewis has made me almost obsessed with saving and counting my pennies. So the very first thing I would do is work out what I would initially like to spend to get the dream finish and secondly, what the dream finish would actually cost. Paint, tools, light fittings, filler, underlay, flooring, curtains, doors, furniture…there’s quite a lot that can go into just one room! So try and work out your budget as early on as possible and don’t forget a contingency fund (if you have any contingency money leftover you can buy yourself a treat! You deserve it!)

MOOD BOARD

Pinterest is your friend. Don’t fall into the trap of buying lots of furniture and fixtures that you love individually but don’t work together. Creating a mood board can give you the opportunity to throw together some colour schemes and styles, have a play and most importantly MAKE MISTAKES!

SHOP AROUND

Don’t just go to one big brand shop for all your materials. It might feel like the first port of call to get everything you need, but you might be able to save a fortune if you do a little bit of price comparison. There are many alternative DIY outlets that you can research online, click and collect or get delivered to your home. TOP TIP: Don’t be intimidated by places that you think are just for traders, these places want your custom too!!

PREPARATION

It’s tempting to get straight on with slapping paint on the wall thinking a fresh coat of paint will hide all those imperfections and instantly improve your room…but you’d be missing out on the most important aspect of decorating! If you want a high quality finish you have to take some care and attention into preparing your walls/woodwork. I’m sure we have all encountered light switches or plug sockets covered in paint! I promise you, the more time spent in this prep phase, the better your room will feel once completed.

NEED A HAND?

DIY is very fulfilling as a homeowner and there is nothing more satisfying than showing off that you did it all on your own! But…there is no shame in calling up a pro to help speed up the job and get it completed to an exceptionally high standard. You never know, they might be able to give you some tips that you can use on your next DIY project!
